Charlotte, NC – Charlotte 49ers redshirt senior forward Bernard Sullivan, who has missed the last seven games, has decided after consulting with the 49ers medical staff to end his playing career because of accumulation of concussions.

“This has been a really tough decision for Bernard,” Charlotte 49ers coach Mark Price said. “After meeting with me and our medical staff, he felt that this was the right decision for him and his future and we certainly support him. We believe the overall health and well-being of our players comes first before basketball. We want to thank him for his contributions to the Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball program.”

Sullivan, who transferred to Charlotte in 2013 after playing his first two collegiate seasons at Clemson, saw action in 23 games during his career with the 49ers. Last season, he missed the first 19 games due to a concussion. In the 2014-15 season, he averaged 4.8 points and 2.7 rebounds over the 49ers final 13 games including recording his first double-figure scoring game as a Niner with 12 points against Marshall,March 7.

This season, Sullivan saw action in 10 games with nine starts. He was averaging 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game prior to his injury. He recorded six double-figures scoring games including scoring 20 points with seven rebounds against Davidson, December 1. Against 21st-ranked Miami, he grabbed 12 rebounds.

The 49ers continue their four-game home stand with games this week against Marshall and WKU in Halton Arena. First, the 49ers play Marshall this Thursday, January 21 at 7 pm. Then, the 49ers conclude the home stand against WKU, Saturday, January 23 at 6 pm.
